Kernel Components Not Marked for Update When Installing a Kernel Hotfix for AX 2012 R3

By Jackie Olson | January 7, 2015

I am currently on Kernel build 6.3.164.3323 (KB 3000518) and when installing a hotfix for AX 2012 R3, ran across the error 'Kernel Components Not Marked for Update'.

I downloaded the latest kernel from the Microsoft Dynamics blog, Overview of AX Build Numbers.

At the time I ran into this issue, the latest kernel hotfix for AX 2012 R3 was KB 3015739 (Build 6.3.1000.601). I installed this on a server where I have the AOS, and client components installed.  The Review components for the installation of this KB shows – (none of the kernel components were checked. Meaning it didn’t recognize that it needed to update any of my kernel components, which is an issue!)

You'll notice only the US Payroll components are marked.  It should have marked the AOS and Client as well…but it did not.  Below is a screen shot of AX components that I have installed on this server -

Cause:

Visual Studio 2013 and Report Viewer 2012 is now required for kernels post CU8. For more information on this check out the Microsoft Dynamics AX Support blog, Visual Studio Tools for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 Now Requires Microsoft Visual Studio 2013

The solution:

Uninstall Report Viewer 2010 and the old AX visual studio tool (via AX set.exe, remove feature), if you have any of these installed, then install Visual studio 2013 and Report Viewer 2012.

I uninstalled report Viewer 2010 (from Programs and Feature in Control Panel) then installed Report Viewer 2012. I also un-installed Debugger (running AX setup.exe from the AX install media and select to Remove components) – not sure if this is needed but I was told I need to remove debugging tools which I didn’t have installed.

I installed Report Viewer 2012 from here –

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=35747

The installer told me I needed – Microsoft System CLR Types for SQL server 2012.

Report Viewer

So I installed System CLR Types for SQL server 2012 from here –

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=29065

You have to scroll down and look for this –

CLR Types

After the CLR types is installed, go back and install the Report viewer 2012.

Then run the updatesetup.exe to install the kernel hotfix (I am installing KB 3015739)

And now you will see the check boxes by the kernel components, indicating the hotfix will update these components. If you have Visual Studio 2013 with Update 4 installed, then you will also see the option to install the AX Visual Studio 2013 tools.

Update Installer

After the installation, you may check the version of your AX32.exe and AX32serv.exe and they should both have version 6.3.100.601
