Dynamics GP End of Life Timeline Stoneridge Software

On September 25, 2024, Microsoft announced that the Microsoft Dynamics GP product would no longer be supported after April 2031 and outlined key dates for the overall support lifecycle. We support many clients on Dynamics GP today. We want to assure our clients that we will continue supporting Dynamics GP. It is also important for you to understand what this timeline means.

Key Dates for Microsoft Support for Dynamics GP

Microsoft had previously announced dates in 2025 and 2026 limiting new customers on Dynamics GP, so we put all the key dates on the timeline below:

  • April 1, 2025: No new customers can acquire GP perpetual licenses
  • April 1, 2026: No new customers can acquire GP subscription licenses
  • Sept. 30, 2029: End of product enhancements, regulatory (tax) updates, service packs, and technical support – end of mainstream support
  • April 30, 2031: End of security updates – end of extended support

What Does End of Support Mean?

Mainstream support means Microsoft will continue to enhance the product, provide regulatory and tax updates (in the supported jurisdictions), and provide technical support at the standard support rates. With the news this week, the end of mainstream support is now Sep 30, 2029.

If you are using Dynamics GP Payroll and rely on annual payroll updates, that means you will not receive a new update at the end of 2029, so payroll users should pay extra attention to this date. For Dynamics GP users not using payroll, you may be able to continue after this date with limited interruption but you will not be able to reach out to Microsoft after this date and if there is a bug in the software that’s not resolved by then, it won’t be resolved.

Extended Support means that Microsoft will continue to provide security updates and extended support until the end of April 2031. Security updates will be bug fixes related only to security threats, so it does not cover most bugs nor does it include tax updates. To participate in extended support, you typically have to purchase an add-on support agreement from Microsoft, otherwise, you are not able to raise support tickets with them. If you are looking for Microsoft support after Sep 2029, your best course of action is to submit the ticket to your partner, like Stoneridge Software, for the help you need.

What Does the Future Hold for Dynamics GP Customers?

The good news is that Microsoft has mature, compelling cloud-based products and transition paths for Dynamics GP customers to either Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central for small to mid-market customers or Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Supply Chain Management for corporate and enterprise customers.

While you don’t need to upgrade right away, it’s a good time to start discussions with your team on how you will proceed going forward, whether you want to continue using Dynamics GP, want to host Dynamics GP in the cloud or move to Business Central.
