Determine the Best Way to Encrypt for Your Data and Improve Cybersecurity
There are many ways you can encrypt your data to ensure it stays safe and improves your cybersecurity plan.
SkyDrive. DropBox. iCloud. Google Drive. The list goes on…
Storing data, particularly in the cloud, is a convenient way for people who want “everywhere” access. It’s becoming so common that it’s almost impossible to avoid.
But while your data may be encrypted from the public by your provider, it can be potentially read by its employees and open to abuse. Why would your storage provider be interested in your data? There are multiple reasons, and they may not be as altruistic as Edward Snowden claimed they were.
Fortunately, you have a variety of options to encrypt your data to help keep it from prying eyes.
SharePoint
Microsoft SharePoint gives you an excellent foundation for private cloud data storage; you also have the best of both worlds by storing your data on your server. SharePoint provides its own encryption and anytime access, and since it’s a private cloud, there’s less worry your data can fall into the wrong hands. You can publish content to SharePoint anytime anywhere from any Office application, and you can easily share your work with people inside or outside your organization.
Tonido
The free version of Tonido desktop software allows you to store and sync up to 2 GB of data in the cloud with your main computer. Tonido is relatively new to the cloud data storage market space and still has to prove itself, but Stoneridge Software’s IT staff is keeping an eye on Tonido because it has a lot of potential.
BitLocker
BitLocker is a Microsoft data encryption product that encrypts everything on your entire hard drive. Another feature called, “BitLocker to go”, gives you the option of encrypting your data to an external hard drive. All you need to do is turn it on, and any file you save to the particular drive you’re working on is automatically encrypted.
TrueCrypt
TrueCrypt is open-source software that uses “on-the-fly” encryption to store information locally on your device. It uses public keys, and by providing the correct password/key file, you can choose which file icon you want to access. TrueCrypt unencrypts data as you need it so that the entire file is never completely unencrypted at any point in time.
