Excel and Word Capability in Dynamics GP

By Tim Gable | January 15, 2019

Dynamics GP has been compatible with both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Office for several versions but as of January 2019, Microsoft is now installing Office 2019 64 bit by default. Previously, Office 32-bit installs have always been the defaults. This will cause issues if you are using the MAPI client in Dynamics GP.

If you use the 64-Bit install of Office you are required to use Exchange in the system settings and some users don’t like this because then it doesn’t use the actual Outlook install, it just uses a generic email that doesn’t allow you to use your signature or updated formatting.

The 32-Bit install works with both MAPI, which allows you to work through the outlook client, and exchange. Today, GP 2018 only shows as compatible with Office 2013 and 2016. Also be on the lookout for other issues as the 64-bit version of office has known issues with add-in’s. Here is Microsoft's announcement:

"We’re making some changes to default installation settings:

Office ProPlus and Office 2019 will now be installed with 64-bit as the default setting. Previously, the default setting was 32-bit at installation. This change will begin rolling out in mid-January, 2019."

How Does This Affect Me?

After this change takes place, the 64-bit version of Office will automatically be installed unless you explicitly select the 32-bit version before beginning the installation process.

If you install the 64-bit version, but wanted the 32-bit version instead, you must first uninstall the 64-bit version before installing the 32-bit version. The same is true if you installed the 32-bit version but want to install the 64-bit version.
