Microsoft Introduces Microsoft 365 E7, Agent 365, and Claude in Copilot

By Ridhwaan Unia | March 16, 2026

Microsoft recently announced several major updates to its AI strategy within Microsoft 365, centered around new capabilities for AI agents, Copilot enhancements, and a new enterprise bundle called Microsoft 365 E7.

These updates are especially relevant for IT leaders, security teams, and organizations already evaluating advanced Microsoft 365 capabilities, including Copilot and higher-tier security and identity tools.

Below is a practical overview of what was announced and what it means for organizations using Microsoft 365.

A New Phase for Microsoft 365 Copilot

Instead of relying on a single AI provider, Microsoft is integrating models from both OpenAI and Anthropic. This means that different AI models, including Anthropic’s Claude, can be used depending on the task being performed.

The idea is that different models may excel at different types of work. Some may be better suited for deep research or reasoning tasks, while others may prioritize speed or conversational responses. By supporting multiple models, Microsoft is positioning Copilot as a platform that can use the most appropriate AI model for each scenario.

This shift reinforces Microsoft’s long-term vision of Copilot as a flexible AI platform embedded across Microsoft 365 applications, rather than a single, one-size-fits-all AI experience.

Introducing Microsoft Agent 365

As AI agents become more common, organizations will need a way to manage them. To address this, Microsoft announced Microsoft Agent 365, a new service that acts as a management layer for AI agents.

Agent 365 provides capabilities to:

  • Observe how agents are being used
  • Govern their permissions and lifecycle
  • Secure access to data and resources

In many ways, Microsoft is treating agents similarly to employees within an IT environment. Just like users, agents can have identities, permissions, and access controls.

From a licensing and governance perspective, this signals that AI agents are becoming first-class identities in Microsoft environments. As adoption grows, organizations will need to consider how agent access, security, and cost are managed alongside traditional user licensing.

The platform is expected to become generally available on May 1, 2026, with pricing starting at $15 per user.

The New Microsoft 365 E7 Suite

Alongside these AI updates, Microsoft introduced a new enterprise bundle called Microsoft 365 E7.

This package combines several existing offerings into a single subscription:

  • Microsoft 365 E5
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot
  • Microsoft Entra Suite
  • Microsoft Agent 365

What is Microsoft 365 E5? Microsoft 365 E5 is Microsoft’s highest-tier productivity and security license. It includes advanced security, identity, compliance, and analytics tools beyond what’s available in E3 licenses, such as enhanced threat protection, identity governance, and insider risk management.

The goal of E7 is to simplify licensing for organizations that want a fully integrated AI, productivity, and security platform.

E7 is expected to be available starting May 1, 2026, with pricing starting at $99 per user per month. Microsoft says this is intended to be more cost-effective than purchasing each component separately.

Who Is Microsoft 365 E7 Designed For?

Microsoft 365 E7 will primarily appeal to organizations that are already using or considering E5-level security, investing in Copilot at scale, and looking for centralized governance of AI agents and identities. For smaller organizations or those earlier in their AI journey, E7 may be more than what’s needed today.

What This Means for Your Organization

Microsoft’s latest announcements make it clear that AI, security, and identity management are becoming increasingly interconnected within Microsoft 365. While offerings like Agent 365 and Microsoft 365 E7 can simplify access to advanced capabilities, they also introduce new licensing considerations around cost, governance, and long-term planning.

If you’re evaluating Copilot, E5, or future AI adoption, it may be a good time to review how these new offerings align with your current Microsoft 365 licenses.
