Import Assets with Asset Management Tools in Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations

I was looking into a recent issue when importing data using the Asset management Assets entity, and it presented me with an interesting challenge. After I imported the assets, the Manufacturer was not showing up in the user interface. This intrigued me because I was able to verify that the MODELPRODUCTID field was populated in the DMF staging table. The D365 label on MODELPRODUCTID is "Manufacturer", but the field PRODUCTID also had the D365 label of "Manufacturer".
So does this mean you don't need MODELPRODUCTID? While that was my initial thought, I found that if the field MODELID is populated, then MODELPRODUCTID is required. I did not, however, find any dependencies between PRODUCTID and those other two fields.
This leaves us with the following valid combinations of these three fields:
