Dynamics GP Support timeline update (2)

Microsoft has recently announced an extension to GP end-of-life support.

Product support has been extended to December 31, 2029, instead of ending on September 30, 2029. According to Microsoft, this change will better support clients who use GP through their tax year-end.

It also means that clients won’t have to switch ERP systems in the middle of the year and will still receive updates for 1099, W2, T4, RL-1 forms, and US and Canadian tax changes.

Updated Key Dates for Microsoft Support for Dynamics GP

Microsoft had previously announced dates in 2025 and 2026 limiting new customers on Dynamics GP, so we put all the key dates on the timeline below:

  • April 1, 2025: No new customers can acquire GP perpetual licenses
  • April 1, 2026: No new customers can acquire GP subscription licenses
  • December 31, 2029: End of product enhancements, regulatory (tax) updates, service packs, and technical support – end of mainstream support
  • April 30, 2031: End of security updates – end of extended support

What Does the End of Support Mean?

Microsoft recently announced that mainstream support for Dynamics GP will end in 2029, with extended support continuing until April 2031. Here's what you need to know to prepare for these changes:

  • Mainstream Support:
    • Enhancements, regulatory and tax updates, and standard technical support provided.
    • Payroll users will no longer receive annual updates after this date.
    • Non-payroll users may continue using the software with limited functionality but without Microsoft support.
    • Unresolved software bugs will not be addressed as of this date.
  • Extended Support:
    • It includes only security-related bug fixes and excludes most other bugs and tax updates.
    • Requires a paid add-on support agreement to raise tickets with Microsoft.
    • Partners like Stoneridge Software can assist after December 2029.
  • Action Steps:
    • Plan for payroll needs post-2029 if applicable.
    • Consider extended support options or partner assistance.
    • Review Microsoft’s lifecycle policy for more details.

Understanding the timelines for mainstream and extended support is critical to effectively managing your Dynamics GP environment. As these dates approach, ensure you have plans for payroll updates, extended support needs, or partner reliance. Learn more from Microsoft's Fixed Lifecycle Policy.

Stoneridge Software Is Here to Help: Reach Out to Discuss Your Options

With support ending in the years to come, clients running GP have three main pathways forward:

  1. Continue to operate Dynamics GP on-premises: Stoneridge will continue to help you and support your GP system, even if it’s on-premises. While this will come with some risks and be harder to maintain over time, Stoneridge will still support you and your solution.
  2. Upgrade to Dynamics 365 Business Central: Upgrading to a fully cloud-based solution like Business Central is an option that will give you access to the Microsoft Cloud and many great features not available in GP. If you are considering this move, you might want to consider doing it before the end date in December 2029.
  3. Host Dynamics GP in Azure: With this option, you can continue to run GP but host it on the Microsoft Cloud. This gives you access to some of the Microsoft cloud benefits while letting you keep the GP system your team is familiar with.

Stoneridge experts can help you determine which of these two cloud options is best for your business and help you implement and optimize them. No matter which option you choose, Stoneridge is dedicated to supporting you through this transitional period.
