Dynamics AX 2012 R2 Cumulative Update 6 (CU6) Resources

By Leah Baker | July 7, 2013

At our last AXUG event in Minnesota back on June 20th, I tweeted that Microsoft would be releasing Cumulative Update 6 (CU6) for Dynamics AX 2012 R2 in about a month.  They beat my estimate by 3 weeks - it came out on June 28.  Here's a link to the Knowledge Base article (requires CustomerSource login): https://mbs2.microsoft.com/Knowledgebase/KBDisplay.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;2850972.  Here's the direct download link: https://support.microsoft.com/hotfix/KBHotfix.aspx?kbnum=2850972&kbln=en-us&sd=mbs. The build number for this update is 6.2.1000.1437.

People on AX 2012 R2 may be confused as there is one cumulative update released already - Cumulative Update 1 (CU1).  So why the jump from 1 to 6?  Here's Microsoft's quote from the documentation on why they decided to skip from 2 right to 6:

"Cumulative update 6 is the second cumulative update for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2. As of cumulative update 6, we are changing the numbering scheme for cumulative updates to Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2. We will release cumulative updates with the same release number for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2 and the Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 and Feature Pack versions. The version-specific cumulative updates may not be released simultaneously, and cumulative updates for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2 will be released first"

I recommend you reference the knowledge base article for more information on what's included in this release.  With the release of CU6, the documentation team made many updates to the technical content included on TechNet and MSDN - information about their updates can be found here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/axsupport/archive/2013/06/26/new-and-updated-content-is-available-for-cumulative-update-6-for-microsoft-dynamics-ax-2012-r2.aspx.

The Microsoft development team that focuses on Finance attended the latest Minnesota chapter AXUG meeting and they recommended this update due to performance improvements in reporting as well as the other additions cited in the release notes.

This release only applies to Dynamics AX 2012 R2 - if you are on Dynamics AX RTM or Feature Pack 1, the latest update is Cumulative Update 5.  I'll repeat the disclaimer I state any time a new update is released - if you haven’t started the development cycle yet, I highly recommend you start developing against the latest release.  If you’re in the middle of a deployment, you’ll generally want to stay on your current build unless there’s a key new hotfix in this latest release that you need in order to go live successfully.

We’re happy to help you with these questions if you want advice on how to proceed.
