Importing Addresses in Dynamics AX 2012 with an Attention line using the Data Import Export Framework (DIEF)

by | Feb 13, 2017 | Dynamics AX

Over and over and over again, I get the question: How do you add an attention line, as its own line, when importing addresses in Dynamics AX using the Data Import Export Framework (DIEF)? How do we do that? Well, I am here to pass this “how-to” information on to our loyal Stoneridge blog followers.

The first thing you need to understand is the import template for importing addresses. We try to simplify this template as much as possible so here are the fields that we typically import. I will list the DIEF Field Name along with a description of the field for everyone to understand what the field is. We will focus on Vendor addresses today but this information translates to other entities as well typically with small variations to the import template.

Dynamics AX 2012 Import Template:

  1. AddressName – The Name of the Address
  2. CountryRegionID – Country of the address
  3. VendAccountNum – Vendor’s account number
  4. LocationRole – Type of address or purpose of address (Example: Invoice)
  5. City
  6. County
  7. State
  8. Street – Street with the street number
  9. Zipcode

NOTE: You can import addresses/faxes/etc… associated with the address but I will leave this import as just the address information.

The key at this point is the Street field in the template. If you are in an Excel spreadsheet filling out the template on the Street field you would simply need to add you attention line and then use Alt+Enter to add a carriage return to the cell and then on the line below the attention line you’d add your address, that’s it. Below is an example of what the street field would look like.

Below is how the Business Address from above came into AX.

In conclusion, this is a small change to make on your address import in Dynamics AX, but I think on every data migration I have been part of this question has come up. So I hope this information is as valuable to you as it has been to others!

I appreciate this post, but one question: what if the source file is provided by a third party, and they are not able to insert the line break in the spreadsheet for you? Is there a way to take two columns in the source file and merge them into one field with a line break between them during the import?

  2. Brandon Carmichael

    Hello Daniel:

What type of file is your source file?

  3. Daniel J. Zook

The source file type is text, either pipe-delimited or comma delimited.

    Hello Daniel:

Thank you for your response. I am not aware of how this can be done during the update process; however, I would have a work around. You could open the source file in Excel, and do a basic merger of two fields.

1.) Click the cell where you want to put the combined text.
    2.) Type =(
3.) Click the first cell that contains the first text you want to combines.
    4.) Type &CHAR(#)& (‘#’ will be either a 10 or 13, see below)
Depending if you are on a Widows or Mac computer, use the following to create a character return:
    Windows: CHAR(10), Mac: CHAR(13)
5.) Click the next cell with the text that you want to combine.
6.) Type ) and then press ENTER.

Thanks for the info. It isn’t related to a current project right now, but I was curious about the functionality available.
